Q: Does the roam require the sonos app, or can it be used like any other bluetooth speaker? i’ve learned to hate the app.

This speaker is a Bluetooth gateway for your other speakers. If you want to play Bluetooth on all of your speakers, you will need the app to gain access to your other speakers. However, once connected, you can stream ANYTHING from your phone to ALL of your speakers. You do not need to go through your Sonos app to play music. It's a real game changer because now you can use all of your speakers like a generic Bluetooth speaker.

Q: does this have hands free google assistant control ?

If you enable it using the Sonos app, it can support Google Assistant voice controls.

Q: Why would someone buy a pair when the stereo pairing doesn't really work? I mean, you _can_ pair them but within hours, they'll unpair.

Paired two speakers several years ago and they’ve never become unpaired. Make sure to pair in the app.
